About the Author

Harvey "Smokey" Daniels has been a city and suburban classroom teacher and a college professor, and now works as a national consultant and author on literacy education. In language arts, Smokey is known for his pioneering work on student book clubs, as recounted in Literature Circles: Voice and Choice in Book Clubs and Reading Groups, and Minilessons for Literature Circles. His latest bestselling books on content-area literacy are The Curious Classroom; Comprehension & Collaboration, Second Edition; Upstanders; Subjects Matter, Second Edition; the Texts and Lessons series; and Content-Area Writing. He is also coauthor of Best Practice, Fourth Edition, and The Best Practice Video Companion as well as editor of Comprehension Going Forward. I appreciated both the support and criticism given to various components of the Common Core. The authors seem to move around and through the modern political fashion just fine as they present concrete examples of the functional teaching of reading. The folksy style makes the book accessible, and many see it as a strength. I prefer just a bit more formality. Some of the "research" used to support the techniques refers to educator blog posts, but much of it does appear to be authentic educational research of varying quality. The techniques do have strong anecdotal support. In a sentence: The two authors do appear to know their business, and communicate it succinctly and accessibly.

This book is an absolute must read for any non-English teacher in high school- although it would serve as a good reminder to ela teachers as well. I could absolutely see this book being approached as a PLC book study for groups trying to close the achievement gap in the area of secondary literacy- so many explicit strategies that could help a school building or department get traction towards reaching their goals.

This book is pretty simple. I am not sure why so many people love it.

For a textbook this is very practical and easy to read. Lots of examples and ideas to use in the classroom.
