Five star reviews? Are you all drunk? This book covers some good material, but several chapters are riddled with errors, sloppy code samples, and repetitive text that make for a very annoying read. Some chapters are well-written, so I suspect the others weren't drafted and edited by the primary author. Also, there are numerous references throughout the book to sample scripts that are supposedly downloadable from the Oracle Press/McGraw-Hill websites. I've scoured those sites and couldn't find any of the noted scripts available for download.Overall, this book left the impression that it was cobbled together in a rush to meet a deadline.
There are quite a few useful Oracle's PLSQL packages are available but not covered in this book.

This book is McLaughlin's best work yet. The lessons in this book are presented so clearly that even if you don't feel adequate in PL/SQL or java you will get a lot out of this book. There are tons of examples and the illustrations are magnificent. One of the things I liked most about this book is that it is direct and to the point. There is no fluff wasting your time. The concepts are laid out as simply as they can be. The chapters about Application security were fantastic. Using the 2012 LinkedIn database breach (among others), the book keeps you interested with real life examples about the importance of security. I would recommend this book to anyone with advanced programming skills, whether you are using PL/SQL or not. The concepts in this book are beneficial to everyone in the field.
This book is a must if you need to learn how to use any of the advanced programming features and techniques in Oracle. It clearly walks you through the process of how to use Java in the database and how to interface with existing eternal libriaries written in both Java and C. Through out the book there is a strong focus on how to write secure applications both in Java and PL/SQL. There are even two chapters dedicated to the topic of application security. This alone is a strong reason for purchasing this book. In addition, this book does a thorough job of covering how to do file I/O using both PL/SQL and Java. It even has a chapter on high speed data transfer for importing and exporting large volumes of data such as in a data warehousing ETL application. I found the chapter on how to use PL/SQL to gather statistics for tuning the performance of your queries particularly useful.The book is very well written and is full of easy to follow examples. It does, however, assumes that you have a working knowledge of the Oracle architecture, PL/SQL and Java. There is an appendix on basic Java if you need a refresher but still feel that you should have had some working knowledge of Java to get the most out of the Java related topics.
